MMSD invites families and community members to weigh in on "Building for the Future" boundary review
MADISON, Wis.—The Madison Metropolitan School District is hosting 14 community input sessions beginning next week as part of “Building for the Future,” a comprehensive two-year review of school attendance boundaries designed to proactively plan for the city's continued growth and ensure equitable access to programs and opportunities across the district.
Madison is projected to grow by approximately 100,000 residents by 2050. With this initiative, MMSD intends to get ahead of that growth, working in consultation with MGT, a national firm specializing in enrollment studies, to examine how attendance boundaries can best reflect the needs of a changing city. The review is guided by five principles: balancing building capacity, promoting diverse student bodies and equitable access, prioritizing walkability and neighborhood school cohesion, minimizing disruption to students and families, and ensuring boundaries support specialized programming such as dual language immersion, STEAM and special education.
"This process only works if we hear from as many voices as possible, and that means making it easy and accessible for every family in our district to participate," said Cindy Green, assistant superintendent of strategy and innovation. "These sessions are an opportunity for community members to learn about the work, ask questions and share what matters most to them. Their input will directly shape the path forward."
No decisions about attendance area changes have been made. These sessions are part of the review’s input phase, representing one of several opportunities the public will have to share their thoughts with the district before recommendations are presented to the Board of Education in early 2027.
